The Tucson Electric Vehicle Association (TEVA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the adoption, education, and benefits of electric vehicles (EVs) within Tucson, Arizona, and its surrounding communities. From its inception, TEVA has been instrumental in promoting sustainable transportation through provision of vital data and grassroots projects that allow residents and businesses to try out electric vehicles (EVs) as a green alternative to the traditional automobile. The mission of the organization is to decrease carbon dioxide and clean the air and to make the world a more sustainable place.

The Mission of TEVA

‘TEVA’s mission is to accelerate the transition to a sustainable, green mode of mobility through awareness of the environmental and economic advantages of EVs. The association is also keen to remind us that electric vehicles cut not only greenhouse gases but also air pollution and reliance on fossil fuels. TEVA is counting on EV adoption being widespread enough to make a difference in Tucson’s environmental health, and, from there, to make Tucson a place that is of concern to those of us who are concerned about sustainability.

In pursuit of these aims, TEVA works via public education, community outreach and partnerships with local business, government and academic institutions. Through these events, TEVA also gives Tucsonans an opportunity to gain more knowledge about EV technology, infrastructure, and the future benefits of electric vehicles.

Educational Initiatives and Public Awareness

One of TEVA’s primary activities is education. It also provides educational programmes, workshops and public talks to inform the wider public about the technology and usability of EVs. Things like these just give people an idea of what EVs are inside here, what EVs are out there, how much money they’re going to save at the pump if they drive an EV, and that EVs are going to be getting cheaper and cheaper, and that there are incentives and tax credits out there.

TEVA also actively combats myths surrounding electric vehicles. The availability of charging points, or ‘range anxiety’, as it’s called, is one of the most frequently cited worries. To help with that, TEVA keeps a running database of Tucson’s growing EV charging network, and features resources that make it easier to own an EV. By directly delivering routinely available, useful data to the public, TEVA could help more people like them appreciate the virtues of the electric vehicle.

Advocacy for EV-Friendly Policies

The other is TEVA (Transportes Electricos Verdes, or Green Electric Transports), a clean transportation advocacy group that also engages in local policy advocacy to encourage EV-friendly infrastructure and policies. The group also advocates for an expanded charging network, expedited permitting for chargers at homes and businesses, and a subsidy for those who buy an EV. Equally important, TEVA’s strong partnership with the Tucson City Council, state lawmakers and transportation agencies has helped catalyse community initiatives that will facilitate EV adoption, including more public charging ports and EV rebates.

TEVA also advocates public transportation and city fleet integration of EVs, both of which TEVA sees as ‘generating public exposure and acceptance of electric vehicles among Tucsonans’. Work like this advocacy helps create a more sustainable transportation system for Tucson, one that will eventually serve all of its citizens, in the form of a reduced city carbon footprint and cleaner air.

Community Engagement and EV Enthusiast Network

An EV fan’s Mecca, TEVA is where owners, buyers and evangelists can meet and experience. TEVA also hosts regular gatherings and events, such as ‘Ride and Drive’, in which guests get to test drive various EV models, and listen to EV owners describe the EV lifestyle firsthand. For anyone who’s thinking of buying an EV, if they can get to one of these events, it’s worth more than its weight in gold because they can ‘touch’ the technology, ask questions, and do it in a casual, friendly setting.

TEVA also attends larger festivals, Earth Day or environmental expos or citywide sustainability events, where TEVA attempts to extend its outreach to the wider Tucson community. Along the way, TEVA builds up a group of EV evangelists who will go out and spread the word, and encourage others to go electric too.

Looking to the Future: TEVA’s Vision

TEVA can imagine a Tucson of electric vehicles, a city whose transport system is fully integrated with sustainable energy. And as the new technology of EV, or electric vehicles, is coming, TEVA will be on the cutting edge of this technology by letting Tucsonans know the latest and greatest technology and letting them test drive the EV vehicles. The organisation hopes to continue its work in advocacy, education and community building to serve as a model city for sustainable transportation, Tucson.
